No Flying, No Tights

I have news!! I am now, officially, a reviewer on No Flying, No Tights, the super awesome graphic novel review website! I’m glad I have an outlet for my thoughts on books because I’ve wanted to keep this site for other things.

If you want, you can see my first review here. I reviewed Sidekicks by Dan Santat which was a lot of fun! I’ve got more on the way, too, so make sure to check it out!

It’s pretty cool because it’s like being in the cool kids club. They have a Google Group where everyone gets to talk about everything graphic novel related which then gets put into posts and things. Since I just started, I’m still a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of really cool things on the website like Classic Fantastic or Rants and Raves, and I’m observing the experts at work. However, I have been participating in the feature “What Makes Us Happy This Week.”

Sorry if this is too much, but I’m so excited!! Anyway, check it out, if you’re into graphic novels (as all the cool kids are).

Several things…

I have three links for you that vary in their relevance.

First, YALSA Reader’s Choice booklists are being nominated right now. Do you have a favorite horror/thriller, mystery/crime, nonfiction, realistic fiction, romance, science fiction/fantasy or steampunk novel from 2011?? Share it with the world by filling out a nomination for it!

Second, you might want to skip this if you’re not a fan of gratuitous swearing. Everyone still here? Great! The Red State Atheist has a new website called “Go the Fuck to the Library.” You can read all of the reasons people should go to the library or you can even submit your own at the bottom. My personal favorite is “I wish there was something like Netflix but for books…” “There is! Go the fuck to the library.”

Lastly, this link has nothing to do with libraries or YA books but is the MOST RELEVANT THING TO YOUR LIFE! Westlake Ace Hardware has a Zombie Preparedness Center. They have a whole website devoted to what they can sell you to be prepared for the zombie apocalypse. Even better, they have a section for humans fighting zombies and another section for zombies to keep their undead lives going. You’re welcome.

Librarians are brilliant

So, there are so many awesome librarian blogs out there that I have sometimes have trouble keeping up. However, sometimes I find a post from a few months ago that I just have to share. This is one of those cases with Sarah Glassmeyer’s blog. She wrote a post called “Everything I Need to Know, I Learned from Internet Memes.”

This post made me laugh, and it made me think. I love the LOLcats. I love the fail meme. I especially love the Haters Gonna Hate meme. Now, all of these memes and more have lessons to learn for librarians and general human beings (because apparently librarians in a separate category…?) It’s definitely a post worth checking out, if only to feel superior about your knowledge of internet memes. I know I got all warm and fuzzy inside, showed it to my significant other and then laughed at him when he asked what was up with the troll face. Then, of course, I had to tweet about it and write this post. So, I put this in the win column for me.

So, I wanted to use some LOLs to give some of my own advice. I’m not as big picture as Ms. Glassmeyer, but hopefully these will be fun:

Kids, you can be anything you’d like:

Baaaa-aaaad Joke

Surround yourself with happiness to keep out the negativity:

Ur negativities cannot penetrate

Librarians, we tend to be hoarders, keeping all our projects and care worn puppets “just in case.” Sometimes, though, we look a little ridiculous.

Yes I do need them all

And, people can surprise you. You can either post Facebook messages about it or find a way to laugh about it.

Can't Argue

But, still, no matter what… Haters gonna hate… Just be yourself, anyway.
