Banned Books come in Elevens…

Happy Banned Books Week! (That always feels weird to say. Because, we’re not happy about the banned books, but we’re happy to celebrate the week… Perhaps we should go with welcome? Still friendly, but less ambiguous)

Anyway, welcome to Banned Books Week! Stand up for intellectual freedom!

There are a number of interesting lists of banned books. There are, of course, the most factual lists from the ALA. That’s where I usually look to find out what’s been banned and what’s most popular (that’s not the right word, but it has a nice irony…) to ban that year.

However, a lot of lists get created, especially around these times, that compile based on other characteristics. Here are a few that I found interesting.

The 11 Most Surprising Banned Books. Surprise! Innocent looking books that people found offense to.

The 11 Most Ironically Banned Books. Isn’t it ironic? Don’t you think?

And… breaking the streak of 11 (though there are 11 pages to the list), the top 10 censored books according to Time Magazine.

Almost Banned Books Week!!

Hello, all!

Are you crazy excited? I know that I sure am. Don’t know what Banned Books Week is? It is one week out of the year where people around the country celebrate their freedom to read by standing up for all of the books that people have tried to ban. A more comprehensive explanation can be found on the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week website.

So, what can you do? You can do as much or as little as you want! You can read a banned book. Even better, you join the virtual read out and read part of your banned book in a video. Need to find out which books are banned, ALA has quite a few different lists that you can check out by author, year, or most often banned.

Want to find something else to do? Check out some of these resources!

Come back and check out all of the cool things that happen during Banned Books Week!
